The exhibition “Georges de La Tour. From shadow and light”, of which Natixis is the major patron, will be presented from September 11, 2025 to January 25, 2026 at the Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris. This exhibition is the first devoted to Georges de La Tour in France since 1997.

A prestigious and enigmatic painter

A prestigious French painter of the 17th century, Georges de La Tour (1593-1652) was born into modest circumstances in Lorraine, a duchy then independent of France. The artist rose to fame during his lifetime, working for illustrious patrons and collectors, such as the Dukes of Lorraine, Cardinal Richelieu and King Louis XIII. Falling into obscurity after his death, Georges de La Tour was “rediscovered” more than two centuries later, at the beginning of the 20th century.

A master of chiaroscuro

Georges de La Tour left a deep mark on the history of art despite the rarity of known originals (about forty authenticated works). Influenced by Caravaggio’s painting, the artist was able to create his own emotionally powerful pictorial language. The singularity of his work lies in his interpretation of chiaroscuro, nourished by a radical realism and an intense spirituality. In particular, he incorporated chiaroscuro into the religious scenes, which he shaped as scenes of everyday life, eliminating religious symbols, to show the humanity of the characters.

An exceptional collection of works by the artist

By bringing together paintings from public and private collections from more than ten countries, this exhibition allows visitors to immerse themselves in the artistic universe of Georges de La Tour. As a major sponsor of the exhibition, Natixis participated in financing the transport of these works between the lenders’ sites and the Musée Jacquemart-André. Through this sponsorship, Natixis is helping to offer an exceptional artistic encounter for as many people as possible with this rarely exhibited French artist.
