Jean-Baptiste Bernaz is crowned ILCA 7 World Champion

Thursday, 2 june 2022

Jean-Baptiste Bernaz, an athlete supported by Banque Populaire Méditerranée, becomes the first Frenchman to win the ICLA 7 World Championships. ILCA 7 is the new name of the Laser-class single-handed dinghy event, one of the Olympic sailing series.

Jean-Baptiste, a sailor from France’s Var département, has been seeking this holy grail of international competitions for the past 16 years: in 2016 he came close, winning the title of vice world champion in Riviera Nayarit, Mexico. This year, after years of unyielding hard work, Jean-Baptiste was confident when he arrived in Mexico with his new coach Nicolas Leberre. Throughout the competition and despite the oppressive heat, he performed at consistently outstanding levels. He dominated the whole week of the championship, before starting an epic final day. In the end, he carried off the title of World Champion 2022, ahead of the Cypriot Pavlos Kontides and the Croatian Filip Jurišic.
