Maxime Grousset, an athlete supported by the Caisse d’Epargne Ile-de-France*, swam an exceptional race in what remains one of the highlights of the Games: the 100m freestyle final!
The young swimmer from Noumea coached by Michel Chrétien didn’t cave in under pressure but delivered a smooth swimming performance that brought him within a whisker of accomplishing a tremendous feat, that of reaching the 100m freestyle podium! As it turned out, he finished the race in an excellent 4th position.
In what turned out to be an exceptionally high-level race with the winner breaking the previous Olympic record, Maxime Grousset – who clocked in with a time of 47”72 – was following on the heels of the third competitor. This is a remarkable achievement considering his age and the fact that this was his first Olympic Games. At the Beijing Olympics in 2008, Alain Bernard became the first Frenchman to win Olympic gold in the 100m freestyle final at the age of 25: exactly the same age that Maxime Grousset will be in Paris in 2024…
