Agriculture is much more than an economic sector; it is the living foundation of our territories, shaping our landscapes, feeding our society, and contributing to our food sovereignty. Exposed to the effects of climate change, it also offers concrete solutions. Working closely with farmers and stakeholders in the agri-food chain, the Groupe BPCE is committed to supporting this essential sector in its ecological transition.

The challenge of agriculture facing climate change

The global food system is at a crossroads. It is responsible for nearly 30% of greenhouse gas emissions (source FAO) and is heavily dependent on ecosystems and water resources.

At the same time, French agriculture, as a pillar of food sovereignty, health, and employment, supports nearly 700,000 people (source Agreste) and contributes to the economic and social vitality of our territories.

Awareness of these challenges is strong within the agricultural world:

  • 66% of farmers believe that climate change will impact their production.
  • Nearly one in two anticipates water restrictions within five years.
  • One in two says they have modified one or more management factors of their farm due to climate hazards.

These findings come from the study “Agriculture and Viticulture: Prospects Remain Gloomy” by BPCE L’Observatoire, which sheds light on the changes in the agricultural and winegrowing sectors, and underscores the urgency and necessity of supporting this moving industry towards more resilient and sustainable practices.

In the field, growing solutions

Because impact is built on the ground, Groupe BPCE offers expertise, concrete solutions, and tailored support to assist each player in the value chain according to their challenges.

Supporting generational renewal and establishment

  • New Farmer Loan: to facilitate the establishment of new farmers, Banques Populaires have launched the New Farmer Loan in agriculture, offered at a preferential rate and with flexible repayment terms. In 2026, Banque Populaire is dedicating 120 million euros to support this essential cause. With nearly 600 new farmer establishments already supported in 2025, Banque Populaire is providing a concrete response to the challenge of generational renewal, which guarantees the vitality of our territories and our food sovereignty.

Strengthening the attractiveness and development of territories

  • Dedicated financing for winegrowers with Vitibanque: a national system, launched by Caisses d’Epargne, specifically designed to meet the needs of professionals in the wine sector who are committed to sustainable development and social and environmental responsibility (CSR).
  • With the European Investment Bank (EIB), Groupe BPCE is mobilizing 200 million euros for agricultural businesses in France, with one-third of the financing dedicated to projects for climate, biodiversity, and water management.

Investing in more sustainable equipment

  • Agrilismat CAPDURABLE: a preferential interest rate credit offer from Banques Populaires to acquire more sustainable equipment (green agro-equipment, efficient irrigation systems, protection against climate hazards).

Groupe BPCE at the World Living Soils Forum

As a partner of the World Living Soils Forum, a flagship event founded by Moët Hennessy and co-organized by ChangeNOW, which brought together over 500 people—agricultural stakeholders, scientists, business leaders, policymakers, NGOs, and start-ups—in Arles, Sao Paulo, Shanghai, and New York on June 3 and 4, 2026, Groupe BPCE demonstrated its commitment, combining territorial presence and multiple areas of expertise, including those of Natixis CIB and Mirova, to accelerate the transition towards healthier soils.

Key figures

  • Nearly 6 out of 10 farmers-winegrowers say they are engaged in an agroecological approach (source BPCE L’Observatoire)
  • €200 million in credit mobilized by Banque Populaire and Caisse d’Epargne, with the EIB, in favor of the agricultural world
  • Banque Populaire is dedicating 120 million euros to support the establishment of the new generation of farmers, with nearly 600 establishments already supported in 2025.
