Charline Picon recently won a new European windsurfing title in Vilamoura (Portugal), a veritable training center for the Olympic sailing disciplines.
To sum up the 470-class world championships (double-handed dinghy) and the RS:X European championships (surfboard for the Olympic Games): four months before Tokyo, Charline Picon, who took the gold medal in Rio in 2016, demonstrated once again her status as most formidable windsurfer in her discipline by winning her fifth European title. The champion is sponsored by Banque Populaire Aquitaine Centre via the Performance Pact Foundation. “I’m really pleased with this No.1 position which I’ve consolidated a little bit more today before the start of the Olympic Games. It obviously boosts my confidence… because the only regatta I want to win is the one organized during the Games. This European medal confirms the value of everything I’m doing to realize this ambition,” she says. The French athlete Thomas Goyard, supported by Banque Populaire Méditerranée, came in 16th.
As far as the French competitors in the 470 class are concerned, Camille Lecointre and Aloise Retornaz won the Medal Race but narrowly failed to mount the podium, coming in 4th position, 18 points behind the Spanish champions. The men’s duo Kevin Peponnet and Jérémie Mion, both supported by Banque Populaire Méditerranée, finished 9th.
